Types of Closets – Walk-In

Organized closets can bring such peace and joy to a person. Closets can bring efficiency into your life. Imagine walking up to or into your beautifully decluttered closet with all of your clothes visible and easy to select for your day. No stress about where is that shirt or you can’t find that beautiful teal dress for your important meeting, etc.

At Southern Closet Systems, we have many solutions and can consult with you about what works best in your space. We are continuing a series about the top three closet styles that we use:

  1. Reach-In
  2. Walk-In Closets
  3. Walk-In Closets with Character

In this blog, we will be talking about the walk-in closet style.

Walk-In Closet Popularity

Walk-in closets first gained popularity in the 1950s. High rise buildings in New York started building fewer units and more closets so that residents would not need to rely on wardrobes. They range in size and can be used in the master bedroom, 2nd master bedroom, guest bedroom, children’s room, pantry, bonus room, etc.

Size

The size of an average walk-in closet can range from 5 to 12 feet or more in width. The average depth of a walk-in closet can range from 5 feet (for a square room) to 17 feet (or more for a bonus-room-style closet) while maintaining a hallway of 3-feet into the closet, even after you store or hang items along the walls.

Items to Include

Ensure proper ventilation. If there is no window in your closet, you will need to add air circulation to vent moisture and odors, which can be accomplished with heating and cooling vents and/or exhaust fans.

Lighting should be considered in a walk-in closet. Lighting options should include: overhead, spot, track, ribbon, dimmers, illuminated, etc.

Building in shelving adds to the organizations level. Options for shelving in a closet include wire, wall-mounted, heavy-duty, cube, floating, open cabinet, end or corner, shaker, and craftsman.

There are multiple door options now for closets. Some include French, sliding barn, louvered, glass, mirror, bifold, curtains, chalkboard paint, etc.
