Organizational Checklist for Your Newborn Baby

Whether you just found out that you are pregnant, if your due date is right around the corner, or your adoption has been finalized, this organizational checklist will be helpful for you and your growing family. Congratulations on the great news of your new bundle of joy!

Here is a checklist on how to get your nursery and home set up to bring your precious newborn baby home. Consider purchasing these items and setting up the organization in your home:

Furniture

Start researching your furniture needs, floorplan for furniture, décor of your design, etc. Here are some of the furniture items that you may need:

  • Crib
  • Dresser
  • Changing table
  • Glider or rocking chair
  • High chair
  • Custom closet

Depending on the size of your home, you may want to set up a couple of changing stations in your house. Put diapering supplies in several strategic places around your home for efficiency for frequent diaper changes! The living room may be a perfect place for your family. The changing table is used primarily at nighttime in the nursery.

Double up on baby bedding. Set up the crib and cover the mattress in two layers of sheets and mattress pads. Then when one layer gets dirty in the middle of the night, all you have to do is pull off that top layer, and you have a clean crib ready to go.

Storage / Closet

The area that will need the most organization is your child’s closet.

This will provide a space for your baby’s onesies, shirts, pants, dresses/suits, blankets, towels, socks, hats, toys, more. Bring in a closet design specialist to maximize your space and build in flexibility as your child grows.

It is recommended to organize your baby’s clothes by size, for example, by newborn, 0-3 months, 3-6 months, etc.

Need extra storage space? Utilize the area under your crib. Use baskets to store items. You can keep them under the crib. If you don’t like the look of baskets or you want to store larger items you don’t need to access all the time, use a crib skirt to hide everything under the crib.

Get a hamper specifically for your baby. They’re going to go through a lot of different clothing items each day, so you don’t want to mix their clothes in with yours.

Diapers and Supplies

Buy different sizes of diapers and start to go online of the baby superstores to find out the must-have products. Ask some of your BFFs what their favorites are so you can use items highly recommended.

Kitchen Space

Declutter your kitchen and designate a drawer, shelf, or pantry space for baby items. Find a place to store your baby bottles, etc.

Vehicle

Clean your car, remove any unnecessary items, and install a car seat. Stock extra supplies in your truck. Take a few minutes to assemble a small kit of baby essentials that you can keep stashed away in your trunk. Diapers, wipes, extra baby clothes, and an extra shirt may come in handy.

Electronics

Night Lights

Put night lights in your bedroom, the nursery, and the hallways so you can navigate the house at all hours of the night. You definitely don’t want to have to flip on a bright overhead light with a sleeping baby in your arms!

Check Smoke And Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Make sure you have these items that they work correctly, and you have the necessary batteries in these detectors. They need to be changed regularly. A good rule of thumb is to check your detectors when you adjust your clocks for the beginning and end of daylight savings time.

Baby Proof Your Home

Your home can be full of hazards for a new baby or small child. One of the most crucial things to do before the birth of your child is to baby proof your home.

Gates

Stairs are one of the leading causes of injury for young children, so it will be important to place gates at the top and bottom of your stairs to protect your child.

Locks

Put child-proof locks on your cabinets, drawers, and toilets. This will help prevent your child from jamming their fingers and getting into harmful products.

Remove Toxins
Harmful products like cleaning supplies, medicine, plastic bags, and vitamins should be moved out of reach of your children.

Secure Your Furniture

Make sure that you anchor your furniture to reduce the risk of suffocation and injury. Bookcases, dressers, and TVs can all be pulled down by climbing children. These items can cause massive damage and are sometimes fatal.

Thank You Notes

Pick up a cute set of thank you notes and a roll of postage stamps, so you are prepared to send thank you notes after you get home from the hospital. Having the supplies ready to go will make this task much more manageable!
