Nine Tips on Getting Your Closets Organized Before Moving In

If you’re packing up to move or getting ready for an open house, chances are your closets need some attention. Don’t wait until the last minute – three days before move day or the first showing isn’t early enough time! The great news is if you declutter your existing closets out when you do finally move, the items will already be cleaned out.

To help you organize your closet, so it’s easier to pack up, here are some decluttering tips:

1. Download helpful moving apps

Technology can make your upcoming move a more relaxed and smoother transition. Listed below are some helpful moving apps to assist with all of your moving needs.

Realtor.com – This real estate app helps users find homes, apartment rentals, and open house listings directly from the MLS. It also allows users to research neighborhoods, home prices, and schools to find their dream house.

LetGo – Need to purge your stuff before a move? This mobile app makes it easy to sell your belongings at the touch of a button.

ParkMobile – Whether you’re driving your car or renting a truck rental, ParkMobile may come in handy when reserving street parking.

Sortly– Described as “the ultimate organizer app,” Sortly helps users create a visual inventory of their belongings with photos, tags, notes, and more.

Nextdoor– Sell household belongings, Connect with neighbors, and find local home improvement professionals with the Nextdoor mobile app.

Houzz – This mobile app helps users locate home remodeling professionals, as well as inspiration for home design and decor.

2. Plan ahead

The best time to start organizing your closets is as soon as you know you’re moving. Don’t waste time and money packing items you don’t want or need.

3. Create a decluttering system

To declutter your existing closets, gather your items and put them in one of four categories: Keep, Donate, Trash, or Sell pile.

4. Color-coded labels

You may want to consider labeling your moving boxes by corresponding room in a particular color label. This will make it easier to spot your belongings on the moving truck and in your new home.

These color-coded labels marked with corresponding rooms are available to purchase from several retailers (Walmart and Amazon). You can also create your color-coded system with multicolored tape such as yellow tape to indicate a box for the kitchen.

5. Box contains

To keep things organized and easy to find, make a list of each box contents as you pack the box. This will help you to keep track of your belongings (what’s been packed and what hasn’t been packed) and will help with locating your items after the move. A popular method is to number all boxes and then write itemized lists for each corresponding numbered box.

6. Make objective decisions

If you can’t be objective about decluttering your items, ask a friend or family member to help you. With each piece of clothing, ask yourself the following questions. Does it fit properly? Have I worn it in the last 12 months?  Is it in style? Does it suit me? If it’s damaged, will I get it repaired? Would I buy it if shopping right now? Am I confident when I wear it?  Do I have other similar items? That will make it easy to identify which category to put it in – keep, donate, trash, or sell pile?

7. Re-organize

After the clutter is cleared out, select a system for organizing your closets. For example, with clothing, it may be likes with likes, grouping by color, or seasonal sections.

8. Storage aides

Get as much off the floor as possible. Use containers (e.g., baskets) for shelf storage. Remove items that don’t belong (e.g., skis in the bedroom closet). Hang hooks to maximize space. It also makes the area appear larger for house shoppers.

9. Non-clothing

Use the above steps on the rest of your home before moving. Are there duplicates? In each room of the house, consider using the keep, donate, trash, or sell piles.
