Eight Organization Tips for Back to School Success

Parents already know that it’s back to school time for the kids in Tampa Bay. Do you want to start their school year off right with organizational tips, so they have a successful year? Of course, you do. Organization makes or breaks students’ level of success in school because it’s one of those core habits that impacts almost every other area in their academic lives.

Here are some organizational tips for implementing for your school-age child:

1. Set up a daily “check-in” time

To open the lines of communication, set up a regular time to check in with your child about their schoolwork, what is due when, upcoming tests, setting up a calendar system, helping your child with their homework or getting a tutor, etc. Discuss what level of involvement they need and the follow-up that will be implemented.

2. Set up a school workspace in your home

Look around your home and find out an ideal workspace for your child in your home so they can keep everything in one place. Bring in an organizational expert to help you.

3. Set up a homework routine

Communicate with your child to figure out a routine each day to complete their homework to prevent procrastination and late nights.

4. Set up your day the night before

Start training everybody in the family to plan the night before. Layout outfits. Get your homework done and packed away in the bookbag. Pack up lunches the night before. Plan the breakfast for the next morning. Put a note on the kitchen of things to remember to take to school. This way, you have a good night’s sleep with everything planned and you wake up to a productive and stress-free morning starting the day of school for the children and work for parents. If your child’s closet needs organizing, call in a closet specialist to help you prepare your child’s wardrobe, shelving, hanging, etc.?

5. Improve the sleep schedule

Set up a routine each night that includes the “lights out by” policy. Plus, putting electronics in a place where you will not be enticed by it during the night, which will mess up your good night’s sleep concept.

6. Use color coding

Color coding is a great way to get your kids engaged in the organization process for school, which can be difficult. It allows them a voice and some control over the process. They can organize their notebooks and binders by color. Select green for science, red for health, etc.

7. Schedule a weekly “Clean Sweep”

It is incredible how fast clutter can just happen. Even the most organized among us tend to build up clutter over time, no matter how hard we try. So a great way to avoid the clutter each week is to schedule a 20 minute pre-set time each week where everyone in the house drops what they’re doing to clean and get organized. This is a great family project to stay on track with school and home organization efforts.

8. Create a calendar

Creating a space for a calendar for your child’s extracurricular activities is a great way to get the entire family on the same page. Use it to write down the times for swim practice, track, band, drama, etc. Keep the whole family informed and on the same page.

All of these tips can have a significant impact if used regularly.
