Creating the Perfect Closet for a Teenager

Do you have a teenager in your home? Are you having an ongoing disagreement with them about organizing and picking up their rooms? Consider a customized organization system to help them keep things in their places and the room in better shape?

Teenagers go through growing spurts, so their sizes change throughout middle and high school. They accumulate a lot of stuff that doesn’t work for them anymore – clothes, toys, books, etc.

Implement easy and straightforward methods and routines for them that they can follow. The more natural the method, the better chance you have at getting them to follow through.

Clutter

Pick a half day with them and go through their closets, drawers, etc. and get rid of:

  • what doesn’t fit,
  • out of style items,
  • things they don’t like anymore,
  • things they want to give away to others
  • items to donate or make money on

Now you can start with a clean slate on what items you need to organize and store.

Closet Specialist

It is a good idea to bring in a closet organization specialist to work with your teenager on their routine, what special needs they have or want in their closet. The specialist can also find out what you want as a result in your child’s room.

Here are some considerations for you to think about while designing this space:

  • Let your teenager have a voice so they will be part of the solution and not the problem. If they feel heard and some of their ideas get implemented, you have a better chance of them keeping their rooms picked up, neat and organized. They will use the system they helped design
  • Walk through the actual physical maneuvers and activities for your child of their day-to-day routines and want items can be put into place to support them.
  • Look at their extra-curricular activities. Do they need a designated space in their room or closet to store items for football, dance, cheerleading, soccer, track, etc.?
  • What accessories do they wear or use? Add shelves and baskets to store hats, sweaters, belts, jewelry, and other accessories. You can put all of the undergarments, bathing suits, shorts, and unhung t-shirts in a dresser located in the room or closet area.
  • Have an easy to use system in place for dirty laundry where they will use it.
  • Set up a gaming section that has everything organized for the equipment, chairs, screen, etc.
  • Hang different levels in the closet for slacks, dresses, shirts, suits, etc.
  • Set up a section of the room with a desk for homework, bookbags, computer, etc.
  • Make sure there is adequate lighting in different areas.
  • Organize an area for perfumes, jewelry, earrings, hair ribbons, and barrettes, stuffed animals, etc. for the princess teens.
  • For the teen prince, you can have a space for watches, rings, necklaces, and cologne.
  • Shoes are a prized possession for both girls and boys. Design a space either on the floor, in a cabinet with shelves or a hanging rack to display all of the many types of shoes kids have these days – tennis shoes, dress shoes, flats, flip flops, scandals, etc. Add a location for purses for the girls.
  • Teenagers grow so their closet organization system should have the ability to adapt as they change from one year to the next in their interests, style, associations, and preferences.
  • Once the system is in place, monitor how well they use it each month so you can encourage them to keep their room easy to use.
